Dame Edna was a guy dressed in drag named Barry Humphries.
From Australia he had a big breakthrough in North America for a short period of the before people grew tired of his antics.
I suppose it's comparable to fellow Aussie Paul Hogan's (Crocodile Dundee) success above the equator...except he wore pants below the equator.
